CoolSculpting fat reduction has a weird history. A few decades ago, two Harvard scientists agreed to find out why kids that ate popsicles tended to have dimples more often than those that didn’t. It’s one of those origin stories that make you wonder if you’re falling for some kind of urban legend.
Regardless they managed to get the study funded and quickly discovered that the “Dimple/Popsicle” phenomenon was real. It’s due to the fact that outer layer fat cells are destroyed more rapidly than other skin cells.
What’s more, the destruction begins at a higher temperature.
From this Cryolipolysis, the technology behind CoolSculpting was born; and it’s fat destroying capability is as effective as it’s origin story is strange.
What is Cryolipolysis?
Once the cells are irrevocably damaged the body’s immune system kicks into gear. It’s a process called apoptosis (pronounced ap-a-toe-sis) and our system is doing it all day every day. Cell degeneration and death are an important part of a healthy system, we even have cells dedicated to eradicating the waste.
White blood cells, primarily ones called macrophages (pronounced macro-phay-ges), are charged with devouring bacteria and dead cells like the ones produced from the CoolSculpting process.
FDA approved since 2009 it has a (negative side-effect) rate of .01%. This is primarily due to the fact that it works with your body’s normal immune process. Nothing is added or introduced into your body and you already have a system in place to cope with the effect of this type of fat cell elimination.
What should I expect?
Fat cells protect us from the cold, similar to the way that blubber insulates marine mammals. Because of this, these cells are the first to be absorbed when surrounding air cools and your body begins to regulate core temperature.
One word of advice, CoolSculpting is not meant to target all of the excess fat on one’s body! This is especially true for bodies that lean towards obesity. Rather, CoolSculpting targets specific areas of stubborn fat that resist diet and exercise in the body and the face. It is not intended for deep layers of fat!
What is aftercare like?
Latent pain in the treatment area is rare but it constitutes the most common complaint when it comes to side effects. It typically occurred around 14 days after treatment and the pain was easily treatable. All of these study cases resolved without intervention.
