The Importance of Skincare

Written by Avery Samuels, Reviewed by Dr. Justin Harper, MD

The skin is your body’s largest organ. It serves as a protective barrier between your insides and the rest of the world, helps regulate body temperature and acts as a filter. Skin exists in a constant state of growth, with old cells dying as new cells are forming. It’s affected by every aspect of your life, from what you eat to where you live. Healthy skin is better able to fight signs of aging, and heals much faster than unhealthy skin. While aesthetic treatments such as Microneedling and Botox can completely transform your appearance, your at home routine can make or break the continued results you see. Botox can erase your wrinkles, but if you don’t use sunscreen the sun can continue wreaking havoc on your skin and make them come back tenfold. Not only can proper skincare enhance the effects of your aesthetic treatments, but Skinvesting (or investing in your skin) is a smart way to spend your money since it can delay expensive and invasive surgeries and treatments for later years!

The biggest struggle when diving into skincare is choosing the right products for you. There is no “standard routine” that people follow, since skin varies greatly from one person to the next. Even with age, our needs change and what worked in the past for you may not work now. It may feel like a guessing game, but thankfully at Juvly we can help. Our amazing Master Aestheticians are expertly trained and licensed professionals that have spent the time researching so you don’t have to. We offer completely FREE Skincare Assessments with our Master Aestheticians, where any concern is addressed and every question is answered. But how important IS skincare? Well, one look at this photo below can show you the difference skincare can make in your life:

This woman was a trucker for most of her career, and had UV rays continually hitting one side of her face for the entire length of time. You can visibly see the difference the sun makes. The sun ages you faster than any other environmental factor out there, and this is SO preventable! Sunscreen saves lives. Not only does sunscreen prevent wrinkling, sun spots, and harsh damage but it also PREVENTS CANCER! While some people have debated on the efficacy of sunscreen, if you are using the proper products as advised the proof is undeniable. Just look at this demonstration of Sunscreen being put on under a UV camera. The sunscreen almost completely blocks the rays of sun from reaching her skin:

Proper skincare means giving your skin what it needs. Depending on your age and other factors, certain aspects of your routine may change but the #1 aspect of proper skincare is cleansing it properly. Your skin cannot breathe and regenerate properly if you have makeup, sunscreen, and yesterday’s grime built up when you go to sleep. Most clients are advised to cleanse one or two times a day as needed. Skin needs moisture to survive, so avoid using hot water when you wash your face, as the heat sucks moisture from your skin. Try using warm or cool water instead, so that your skin is less aggravated. Avoid harsh or chemical-heavy soaps, as they strip moisture from your skin while possibly clogging it. One of the most important things to remember apart from sunscreen and cleanser is your moisturizer. Your skin needs moisture to survive. Even if you are oily, one of the most common causes of excess sebum production is dehydrated skin. Your pores are now working overtime producing oil to make up for the lack of any good moisture in your skin. You should apply your lotion after cleansing to ensure your skin is properly moisturized. If you have problems with dry skin, moisturizing multiple times a day is perfectly fine!

Skincare gets confusing when you have special needs for certain concerns and you don’t know where to start. What serum do I need to take away my wrinkles? What does it do? How do I stop my hormonal acne? For the most part, anti aging products and acne products can vary greatly from brand to brand. You can piece together your own routine using different items such as cleanser, moisturizer, and then start adding in your “Active” products, things such as Retinols (anti aging) or Benzoyl Peroxide (anti acne). Sometimes, certain brands will make it easy for you and offer kits!  This is perfect for erasing (or at least minimizing) years of photo-damage, melasma, and other unsightly skin imperfections. This set comes with products such as Gentle Cleanser, Toner, Exfoderm (an active anti aging serum), Blender (another active), Hydrating Moisturizer, and Sunblock!
