Your most frequently asked questions about skincare

Written by Ali Waychoff, Reviewed by Dr. Justin Harper, MD

Honestly, what can’t skincare do? It makes your skin look refreshed and clear, and keeps it hydrated and healthy. What more could we possibly ask from it?

Since a good skincare regimen can make all the difference regarding whether or not you’re happy with your skin, it’s understandable that you may have a few lingering questions — what we should and shouldn’t use, what products are going to benefit our face, and are facials worth it every month?

The questions that we get relatively often are usually formed around the word “best.” While we might like some products more than others, there isn’t just one best product or treatment out there. When it comes to skincare, it’s important to understand the best products are going to be what works for you. Since everyone’s skin is different and requires unique attention for specific needs, what’s “best” is something that works well for your skin, and what works for you might not work for the client next to you.

So, why would you postpone healthy, glowing skin just because of a few questions you’re not sure about? Yeah, we couldn’t think of an answer for that one either! It’s time to ask your questions and book a one-way ticket to radiant skin.

Frequently asked questions

We teamed up with a few of our Master Aestheticians to round up the most asked questions about skincare. Thought of by you, answered by us — we make a great team!

How can you get rid of acne on the back?

“Backne” can keep you from taking your shirt off at the pool or wearing a backless dress. It can even feel a little painful when a new breakout is forming. Not fun!

Our Aestheticians would recommend using our Obagi CLENZIderm System to clear any unwanted breakouts up that happen to pop up anywhere on the body. “You can use the Obagi CLENZIderm System to help clear up acne,” says Master Aesthetician Kelsey Anglin. “We can also do back treatments with our microderm service which includes steaming and extractions.”

Since breakouts can happen at any point in time on your back, taking the proper steps to rid your skin of those pesky pimples and keep them away is crucial. Be sure you’re washing your back in the shower and using a fool proof acne system from our shelves to clear up those breakouts.

Is Obagi the best skincare for melanoma and aging?

As we’ve said before, the best products are the ones that are going to work wonderfully with your skin. What works for some clients, may not work for you, and that’s okay! Your skin has different needs and we want to find the best skincare products and plan that will bring out the best in your skin.

Obagi is a line of products that has been around for quite a while. It has proven time and time again that it’s a trustworthy brand that suits all skin types.

“Obagi is a great line full of awesome products. However, I wouldn’t say that it’s the absolute best skincare line for melanoma and aging, as we have many options to pick from these days,” says Master Aesthetician Morgan Howard.

Being able to look through different product lines to see which works well with your skin is important. Shop around and find what works best based on your consult with one of our Aestheticians—we’ll be sure to help you understand what your skin needs.

“I would recommend consulting with your Aesthetician to create a customized skincare regime geared towards you and your skincare needs,” says Howard.

What is the best treatment for uneven skin tones?

A little red here, a little dull looking over there, a little too freckled somewhere else — your skin tone isn’t even, and we understand. That said, it’s easier to achieve a flawless complexion than you think .

“Chemical peels are designed to treat uneven skin tones and pigmentation-related issues,” says Howard. “We recommend starting with a light peel to make sure your skin can handle the more intense peels.”

If you’ve never had a chemical peel before, now is a great time to try one. Book an appointment with one of our Aestheticians to chat about which peel would be the most beneficial for you. The best part about this treatment is that there is minimal downtime — and it’s relaxing!

How often should you Dermaplane?

If texture is a skincare concern for you, we recommend Dermaplane! This treatment involves scraping off the top layer of dead skin and peach fuzz, leaving your face as smooth as can be.

“We recommend every four weeks. You’ll be able to tell when you need it, as your skin might be looking a little dull in appearance,” says Howard.

Treating yourself once a month to rid your skin of that dead first layer doesn’t sound like a bad idea to us!

What’s the best process for a nighttime routine?

Ahh, nighttime. We relax and unwind from the day with a blanket, a furry friend, and a few of our favorite snacks. But don’t even think about crawling into bed without washing the day off your skin, no matter how many yawns you may have let out on the couch!

“A nighttime routine should include a few steps,” says Anglin. “First, make sure you cleanse your skin. You would be amazed at how much dirt and debris your skin can collect in a day from doing normal activities such as driving or working. When you sleep, your skin’s job is to regulate and recharge. If you don’t wash your face before bed, all of the day’s pollution can sink into your pores. A heavy cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and a retinol-based product will help your skin do its best while you sleep.”

You hear that, skin lovers? It’s time to toss out those bad habits of going to bed without washing your face of the free radicals it came into contact with earlier in the day.

What’s the best face wash for oily skin?

If your skin is oily, you don’t want to use just any cleanser. You’ll want to stick with one that’s meant for oily skin. When finding this perfect product for you, you want to be sure that you’re not going to over cleanse — yes, that’s a real thing.

Over cleansing might sound like the most obvious way to care oily skin — duh, just wash all the oil away, problem solved! Wrong. When you over cleanse oily skin, it leaves room for more oil production since the body thinks your skin is drying out.

Be sure to find a gentle cleanser to use day and night to rid the skin of any harmful debris it came into contact with throughout the day, and to incorporate a trustworthy exfoliator in there a few times a week.

“AHA/BHA Cleanser is great for oily skin!” says Howard. “Also, our Obagi daily care foaming cleanser is always a great option for skin types that collect more oil than most.”

What’s the best skin care regimen for dark circles?

SENTE Illumine Eye Cream has been designed for under-eye circles that are difficult to treat, even if the problem is hereditary. Talk to your provider about under-eye filler for any volume loss.” — Kelsey Anglin, Master Aesthetician

What is the best skin care treatment or products for aging skin?

The aging process starts at birth and just keeps going — sad but true. Luckily Juvly is here for you and has a few tricks up our sleeves to help you out.

While we carry many products, they all target something different in the skin. Whether it’s anti-aging, brightening, or improving skin tone, skincare products paired with skincare treatments are one dynamic duo you just can’t beat.

These products are great for aging skin:

  • TNS Recovery Complex — aka your skin’s protein shake! Recovery Complex is full of growth factors that help build collagen and elastin. Recovery Complex also helps to repair blood vessels, reduce inflammation, encourages cell growth, and diminishes fine lines and wrinkles. This awesome sauce is a great post-procedure serum to help speed up healing and recovery.

  • Vitamin C — Vitamin C acts as a best friend to your sunscreen and helps to fight off free radicals. It also helps us produce and store collagen.
  • Vitamin A (Retinoids) — When applied topically, Vitamin A will stimulate collagen production, making them effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Retinoids also help even out skin tone. I personally love Bio Complete Serum by Sente which has time-released retinoids and vitamin C all in one bottle.
  • Microneedling — Improves skin texture, acne scars, fine lines, and skin laxity with minimal downtime. “Everyone needs microneedling!” says Howard.

What are the best products for anti-aging and wrinkle prevention?

So you saw a wrinkle today and now you can’t stop staring at it when you look in the mirror? We can relate.

While wrinkle relaxers are always a great way to fight those sneaky wrinkles popping up as though they were invited, it’s possible your skin might need something different.

“The best products for anti-aging are those that are focused on healthy cell turnover,” says Anglin. “This means products that are ensuring that your skin is maintaining healthy functions. Antioxidant-rich products like SkinBetter Alto Defense, will make sure the pollution isn’t sinking in and damaging healthy cells, therefore protecting your skin.”

Sometimes, the right skincare regimen is all you need to fight wrinkles. Just be sure the products are going to work well with your skin and do exactly what you want them to. If you have questions about that or are wary about where to begin, come on in for a free consultation with one of our Aestheticians so we can tailor a regimen that suits your unique skincare concerns.

“Exfoliating products such as AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser will help scrub the skin clean of any dead or dying cells on the surface of the skin, making the skin brighter, tighter and healthier. Retinol products also help to correct existing damage such as dark spots and pigmentation, which can be skin damage from more than ten years ago. We know tanning was popular in the early 2000s, we don’t judge!”

What is the best way to unclog pores, especially on your nose?

Clogged pores are a perfect gateway for the formation of breakouts and blackheads. And trust us, they do not mind where they set-up shop on the face. In addition to facial masks and microderming, extractions and exfoliators are a few effective treatments to try when you have a little time to pamper yourself.

“There are plenty of great exfoliating products which you should use up to three times a week to keep debris from clogging the pores,” says Anglin. “Microderm is a favorite for people who have very deep pores with a combination of extractions from your Aesthetician.”

Does microneedling help with large pores?

Fine lines and wrinkles? Microneedling. Texture issues? Microneedling. Bad day? Microneedling.

When it comes to treating your skin, starting with microneedling will target most — if not all — skincare concerns. Clients will begin to see results after one treatment, but we recommend a minimum of three for optimum results.

“Microneedling is amazing for any texture related skin problems. Large pores, heavy lines, and acne scarring, we recommend three treatments at minimum for best results,” says Anglin.
